ISP Directory LogoDirectory of Free Email Providers
One of the ways to save money in choosing an ISP is to open and use a reliable third party email account.

You can select an ISP which offers no email accounts or has email problems and not worry. If you need more than one email address, some ISPs charge as much as $5.00 a month to add a second email account

Many of the lower priced ISPs in the FindAnISP.com directory fall into this category.

Free Email also has the advantage that you are not trapped by the ISP you use for access. AOL, in particular, will not forward email after you close your account, and provides no method to export your saved emails from your personal filing cabinet.

You should be able to use the third party email account from ANY ISP (or even AOL) and you won't have to endure the hassle of telling everyone that your email address has changed again.

Types of email service:
  • POP3/SMTP - The internet standard method of receiving [POP3] and sending [SMTP] email. Programs like Eudora and Agent require POP3/SMTP service.
  • WebMail - Webmail allows you to send and receive email from anywhere you have web access - school, work, an Internet Cafe. Webmail is convenient, but your email isn't automatically downloaded to your PC for archiving
  • IMAP - IMAP is a protocol to read email that is more useful than POP3 if your email program supports it. IMAP allows you to read the subject of your emails and apply filters without downloading the message first, for example.
Some free email services also offer free web space. If you're willing to tolerate the advertisements appearing on your web pages, you'll be able to get by with a bare-bones 'Access Only' account for perhaps as low as $9.95/month.
