Changing your ISP service when you move
Are you going back to college / university and living off-campus without broadband?

Are you in the military and being posted to a new base?

Moving to another city for a new job?

Are you a snowbird that lives in two different parts of the country and would like one ISP that you can use in both places?

In order to locate ISPs that have service in both your old and new locations we need the area code AND the first three (the prefix) of both numbers phone number you will use to dial into this ISP.

Current Phone number:  ) -xxxx
New Phone Number ) -xxxx

If you are not sure of the area code and prefix used by your new home, use the White Pages Reverse Lookup feature at Infospace, using an address in the new neighborhood.

If you don't yet know the address you are moving to, use Yahoo's Mapping service and do a search on restaurants or gas stations in the general area where you are considering. Note that without an exact address, you risk moving to an address that is actually in a different rate center. Ask your real estate agent for help if you're not sure.

With a little work now, you can make your move much less stressful by finding your new ISP now, before the heavy lifting starts.

Before you move,

  • Use this form to build a short list of ISPs that offer access in both your old and new locations
  • Sign up the month before you move
  • Get the connection and your new email address working
  • Notify the people in your address book of your new email address.
  • Relax

Once you arrive at your new home, all you have to do is change the access phone number in your internet configuration files and you're done.

The last thing you need to worry about while the movers are unpacking your belongings is fighting with your PC to get internet access working.

Once you're settled in, you can cancel the ISP service in your old home and you're done.

You might ask the old ISP if they would mind forwarding any stray email to your new ISP - many will as a courtesy, some will for a modest fee. A few (like AOL) will not forward email once the account is closed.
